School careers advice can widely vary from school to school, so what are the basics that you need to know?

Timelines

One of the first things to understand is companies usually work to certain timeframes so start doing your research over the summer and be aware that job roles will usually be advertised from October onwards.  These roles will then normally start the following September but this again can vary.

Research

It can be really difficult to know where to find information so here are some places to start:

Rate My Placement is an online review site where students have rated companies

by their experiences on summer internships and placement programmes

TARGETjobs provides career advice and connects students with employers and job roles

PROSPECTS helps guide students to find careers that suit their specific skills base

Milkround offers support to both school leavers and graduates

GOV.UK helps find apprenticeship roles throughout the UK

From 14 years old upwards students need to start thinking about the courses they are taking and the career paths they may be interested in and it is great that you want to be supportive.  Discussing options and offering your support is a great first step!

So how can you support your children?
