What to expect when you join the work place.

It can be quite daunting when you are considering transitioning into the workplace and it's important to understand where you can get support either for work experience or permanent roles. Parents, family and friends can support you emotionally but what should you expect?

Your new employer has a duty of care to provide you with an introduction to your role and offer you support to succeed in it. Your manager, fellow colleagues and HR team are there for you if you have questions. Also, think about building your networks across the teams to gain valuable insights into the business.

Questions to consider asking when you join:

  • What are the hours of work expected and how long do you get for lunch?

  • Are you able to have your mobile phone on your desk?

  • Should you always be on video when you are on video calls?

  • If you have any special requirements what support is offered?

  • How formal should emails be?

Here are some hints & tips:

  • Always have a notepad to hand and take notes in meetings and when you are discussing tasks you are responsible for

  • Provide your manager with regular updates ie daily/weekly

  • Ask for regular feedback

  • Have a to do list to hand

  • Note down the projects and tasks you complete so that you can use these when it comes to reviews as you soon forget what you have been involved in

  • Ask questions!!!

Who should you speak to if you are struggling:

  • Your manager should be the first person to reach out to and are normally happy to help

  • HR are also there to support you so if you want to speak to someone outside of your team then reach out to them

If you are completing work experience or joining the workplace permanently it is key to be prepared. You can look on the companies intranet to review internal policies and ask the IT service desk for assistance to make sure you are working efficiently and you are set-up correctly.

It's an exciting time to join a company so introduce yourself to all those you meet and try and make a positive impact, a smile goes a long way! Make the most of the opportunities available and show your enthusiasm for the best results.
