Build your networks and connections.

Updated: Jun 28, 2023

Attending careers fairs at schools, university and more targeted events can provide great connections between students and employers.

The Bright Network Festival held in October 2018 enabled students and employers to meet and provide an open environment whereby different industries and opportunities could be showcased. A diverse mix of students from different universities and courses were in attendance and were clearly highly motivated towards finding the best career for them. Students were well informed and enthusiastic to speak to employers about a range of subjects from learning how they could best utilise their skills to considering alternate careers options which they have may have not considered previously. TARGETjobs also hold a number of events and fairs which are extremely insightful so use these as useful tools to do your research and get to meet the companies you are interested in first hand.

These events and networking opportunities are great for you to find out what you may like and dislike and you can get to speak to employees to learn about their experiences first hand. Think about what matters to you and consider the questions you will ask to help you make an informed decision around where you wish to apply.

Here are some questions you may wish to consider:

- What progression is offered?

- What support is given with the training programmes?

- What is the culture like?

- Will I be able to influence my career path?

- How can I make an impact in your company?

Preparation is key to making the most of these opportunities so research the companies before you go along and target the firms you are most interested in.
